Paraíso Inhabitado

Minientrada

Weak memories

As time passes, our painful memories fade. It has been just a few months after the fatal accident in Soma mine (Turkey, 13th May 2014). Somehow I’m grateful this article woke up my brain and made me reflect about security at work, emergency plans, responses to accident and, at the top of it as always, politics.

This mining accident happened just one month after my visit to Turkey. I only had the chance to visit Istanbul but I came back amazed by the beuty of the city and specially by the people spirit. I experienced the best hospitality a local has ever given to me. We talked about politics, government censorship, the mature decision of the protesting young group specially visible at Taksim square to keep it pacefull and legal, the enviable strenght of standing in front of an oppressive system with the honest belief that a better future is posible for Turkey and it’s the time for it. It made me think of the Indignados movement in Spain, how it has seemed to be stucked (tho recently was somehow -not directly- empowered by Podemos) and our lack of union while fighting corruption and the politic system in general.

Just then, the accident happened. And we all felt shame and then anger to see Erdogan mentioning 17th and 19th century similar mining desasters, basically claiming that it comes with the job, how he hided behind a grocery store when crowd complained and even how he kicked/slapped a mourning kid. I Heard from my Turkish friends that those behaviours and situations are usual with Erdogan, but not always at this scale or with this media coverage. Just some weeks afterwards followed a taugher censorship campaign specially on YouTube and Twitter in order to control the critics at election campaing. And surprisingly, Erdogan confirmed his position as Prime Minister.

It’s important to be concious that this tragedies still happen, not to forget them and with that in mind keep moving on the track of improvement.
